SHRM Talent Management Conference – From Color to Cultural Inclusion
Posted by: | CommentsOn Wednesday May 2, 2012 I will be speaking at the SHRM Talent Management Conference. My session will be from 10:00am until 11:15am and is titled Diversity – Moving from Color to Cultural Inclusion. This is a topic that get no shortage of attention at HR and Talent conferences around the country, however we will take a different look at the subject.
It seems that to many, a successful diversity program can be measured by looking around our offices and seeing the various colors or ethnic groups that make up the organization – White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, etc. Obviously our outward appearance is the easiest to see and determine.
In my opinion, real diversity is not about color or whether or not we look the same. It is also not about buying into the overused, politically correct assumption that we are all alike – that we have the same priorities; that we view relationships the same way; that we view our role in business the same way.
The fact is that we are ALL uniquely different in many more ways than our exterior can show. Real diversity is about realizing how we are different on the inside, embracing the fact that we are different, and truly understanding why people do what they do.
In a global world, successful diversity programs understand and embrace cultural differences, regardless of the color of our skin. JOIN ME ON WEDNESDAY MAY 2, 2012 at 10:00am at the SHRM Talent Management Conference!
