In the past, we countered a mid-life crisis by buying a new sports car, changing a hairstyle or making-over our wardrobes. (When I turned 36 I just had to have a Ferrari – so I bought one!) Successful in our careers and young at heart, we were determined to enjoy the best of both worlds: the wisdom of experience and the adventurous, sometimes reckless spirit of youth. Could modern times cause us to take more drastic measures when reinventing our identities- mid life or mid career?

Google boss, Eric Schmidt, thinks so. He recently warned that one day people may need to change their names to escape their previous online activity. That means when you’re ready to take the next step in your career-to accelerate towards peak earning power and position-the online behavior of your younger years could come back to bite you in the butt! facebook1We have all heard stories regarding employees being fired from organizations due to questionable comments or behaviors they were foolish enough to place on Facebook, Twitter or other social media site.  My favorite is the story of a junior executive who called his boss to request a day off because he wasn’t feeling well.  A few minutes after the executive hung up the phone with the employee he received an automatic update from his Facebook account via his Blackberry.   The ‘sick’ junior executive posted: “What a great day to play hooky from work and my overbearing boss and play a round of golf with friends. Clubs, beer and hotdogs deserve my time more than that big company does!”  The employee went on to indicate what time he was playing as well as the name of the golf course.  The senior executive jumped in his car, drove to the golf course and immediately terminated the junior executive on the spot.  The now jobless employee argued that his Facebook page was personal and for friends only, indicating that he would sue the company for wrongful termination.  The senior executive then reminded the ex-employee that he (junior executive) sent him (the boss) a friend request to join his Facebook friends list just 2 weeks prior! iphoen-appsFor any of us that have been online, watched TV, or know someone that has, we know that the term “app” is short for software application.  The technology geniuses at Apple made this term famous with the introduction of the iPhone and now with the iPad.  Jumping on the band wagon, just about every other manufacturer has figured out how to stuff a small computer in a cheap plastic case and call it a PDA or smartphone, complete with thousands of “apps” to choose from – Apple, Android, Windows Mobile 7, etc.

Today, there are more than 250,000 apps across the different mobile device platforms, and the number grows daily due to innovation at speeds never before seen.  Whether looking for love, editing photos, or creating noises that resemble bodily functions, there is an app for that only a click away.  Although some of these apps are absolutely useless, they can all be downloaded to miniature devices that a few years ago were thought to be only fiction, like those used in Star Trek and Star Wars.  At this rate of technology evolvement, it’s only natural to wonder what will come next – will there come a time where these little apps will give you an answer before we even know what the question will be? social-media-people1Social Media. First it was a curious way of connecting or reconnecting with friends. Today everyone is trying to turn it into the ‘next big thing’ for business – this includes recruiting.

Columnist and Brazen Careerist CEO Penelope Trunk asks us to rethink how we see social media as a business tool, especially in the arena of finding talent and finding jobs. If you really want social media to populate your talent pool with top performers, you need to stop approaching it as a recruiting tool and start using it to share helpful ideas. Read More→
